What Is the YouTube Partner Program (YPP)?
The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) is the agreement that lets a channel earn money directly from YouTube. Accepted creators receive a share of advertising and YouTube Premium revenue, and they get access to fan funding and shopping features. Without it a channel can still take sponsorships, but YouTube itself pays nothing.
So what is YouTube Partner Program membership worth in practice? YouTube describes the program in its Partner Program explainer: creators keep 55% of ad revenue on long-form videos and 45% on Shorts. That split is the same for a channel with 1,000 subscribers and one with ten million, which makes YPP one of the few parts of YouTube where small channels get the same terms as large ones.
The program matters beyond the monthly payout. Our pricing data shows that a monetized channel sells for roughly 3× the price of a comparable non-monetized one, and the typical monetized channel actually has fewer subscribers than the typical non-monetized one. Buyers treat partner program YouTube status as proof that a channel passed a review they cannot run themselves.
People sometimes search for "YouTube partner programs" in the plural, expecting several schemes. There is one program with two tiers. The entry tier opens fan funding early, and the full tier adds ad revenue. Payment runs through AdSense for YouTube in both cases, and I covered the payout mechanics in the guide on how and when YouTubers get paid.
YouTube Partner Program Requirements and Eligibility in 2026
The YouTube Partner Program requirements for the full tier are 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in 90 days. The entry tier needs 500 subscribers plus 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. Each tier accepts either the long-form or the Shorts path.
The table below lists the four ways into the program and what each one unlocks.
| Path | Subscribers | Activity threshold | Window | Unlocks |
|---|
| Entry, long-form | 500 | 3,000 watch hours | 12 months | Fan funding |
| Entry, Shorts | 500 | 3 million views | 90 days | Fan funding |
| Full, long-form | 1,000 | 4,000 watch hours | 12 months | Ad revenue |
| Full, Shorts | 1,000 | 10 million views | 90 days | Ad revenue |

The numbers are only half of the YouTube Partner Program eligibility requirements 2026 applicants face. The remaining YouTube Partner Program eligibility criteria have no threshold:
- The channel follows YouTube's channel monetization policies.
- The creator lives in a country where the program is available.
- The channel has no active Community Guidelines strikes.
- 2-step verification is enabled on the Google account.
- An AdSense for YouTube account can be linked.
These conditions explain a pattern in our listings. About 63% of million-plus channels are monetized, compared with only around 25% of channels under 100,000 subscribers. Many small channels have the subscribers and the hours, and they are still outside the program because of the criteria that carry no number. If subscribers are your bottleneck, listings of channels with 1,000+ subscribers show what that milestone costs on the open market.
How to Join the YouTube Partner Program: Application Steps
To join the YouTube Partner Program, open the Earn tab in YouTube Studio once your channel meets a threshold, accept the terms, link an AdSense for YouTube account and wait for review. The YouTube Partner Program application is free and takes a few minutes to submit.
Here is how to get into the YouTube Partner Program step by step:
- Open YouTube Studio and select the Earn tab. Channels below the threshold can click "Notify me" to get an email when they qualify.
- Turn on 2-step verification for the Google account that owns the channel.
- Review and accept the base terms of the program.
- Create or link an AdSense for YouTube account. Each creator may hold only one, so reuse an existing account.
- Submit the channel for review and keep publishing while you wait.
- After approval, choose which earning modules to switch on, such as watch page ads and Shorts feed ads.
The most common question I hear is "how do I join the YouTube Partner Program if AdSense is not available in my country?" In that case direct membership is closed, and creators usually work through a network instead. You can join the multi-channel network we operate for that purpose.
Timing matters more than creators expect. In our dataset the typical budget channel is about 11 months old, and only about a quarter of those channels are monetized. Most channels reach the application stage late in their first year or not at all.

Open Revenue CalculatorHow Long Does YouTube Partner Program Review Take?
YouTube Partner Program review usually takes a few weeks from the moment you submit the application. A reviewer looks at the channel as a whole: its main theme, most viewed videos, newest uploads, titles, thumbnails and descriptions. The answer arrives by email and in the Earn tab of YouTube Studio.
The "YouTube Partner Program how long" question usually hides a second one: why was the channel refused? Reddit YouTube Partner Program threads are full of creators who reached every threshold and received a rejection within days. The reasons are consistent:
- Reused content, such as clips from films, TV or other creators with little added.
- Repetitive or mass-produced videos that differ only in small details.
- Misleading titles or thumbnails.
- Watch time or subscribers that came from artificial sources.
A rejected channel can fix the problem and apply again after a waiting period. Deleting the offending videos helps, although the watch hours they generated disappear with them.
Our data shows how often the review is the real filter. Median lifetime watch time among channels listed with us is about 16,500 hours, more than four times the threshold, and most of those channels are not monetized. Hours alone do not get a channel through. Thresholds prove an audience exists, and the review asks whether the content is yours.
That is the gap between the thresholds and acceptance. If you want a realistic schedule for both stages, see my breakdown of how long it takes to get monetized.
What Does the YouTube Partner Program Unlock?
Joining the YouTube Partner Program unlocks ad revenue on long-form videos and Shorts, a share of YouTube Premium revenue, and fan funding tools such as channel memberships and Super Thanks. It also opens YouTube Shopping, which lets creators tag products and earn a commission on sales.
Shopping is the part that changed most recently. According to YouTube, the Shopping affiliate program is now open to all YPP creators with 500 or more subscribers, so entry-tier channels can earn from product tags before they qualify for ads. It is the one recent change to the program that lowered a barrier.
Expectations about income need a reality check. Budget channels in our dataset report median earnings of around 70 USD a month at an RPM near 1.00 USD, which reflects audiences in low-CPM countries. Acceptance starts the income. Niche and audience location decide how large it becomes.
The stronger effect shows up in valuation. Channels that disclose real revenue are priced about 8× higher per subscriber than channels that stay silent on earnings. Membership gives a channel a verifiable earnings history, and that history is what a buyer pays for.
That is also why some creators skip the application entirely and start from monetized YouTube channels for sale. The membership stays with the channel, though the new owner still has to link their own AdSense account and keep the content within policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does the YouTube Partner Program still exist?
- Yes, the YouTube Partner Program still exists and remains the only way to earn ad revenue directly from YouTube. The confusion comes from changes to its structure, including the entry tier at 500 subscribers and the Shorts path. The program itself has run continuously, and YouTube keeps adding features to it.
- Is the YouTube Partner Program free to join?
- Yes, joining is free. YouTube does not charge an application fee, and no agency or service is needed to apply. YouTube keeps its share of ad revenue instead, 45% on long-form videos and 55% on Shorts. People who search how to join YouTube Partner Program faster often land on paid services, and none of them has any influence on the review.
- Do you need AdSense for the YouTube Partner Program?
- Yes, an AdSense for YouTube account is required, because it is how YouTube sends payments. You link it during the application, and each creator can hold only one account. Where AdSense is unavailable, creators typically earn through a multi-channel network that receives the revenue and pays them out.
- Can you be removed from the YouTube Partner Program?
- Yes, YouTube can suspend or remove a channel from the program. Typical reasons are policy violations, reused content, invalid traffic and long periods without uploads. A removed channel can usually reapply after a waiting period once the problem is fixed, and it goes through the full review again.
- Does Partner Program membership transfer when a channel is sold?
- Membership belongs to the channel, so it normally stays in place when ownership changes. The AdSense account does not transfer. The new owner links their own account and takes responsibility for the content, and a sudden change in topic or upload pattern can prompt YouTube to review the channel again.
